1. Mulholland Dr. (2001)

Originally shot as a network TV pilot, David Lynch‘s widely acclaimed surrealist Los Angeles nightmare morphed into a Universal Pictures feature late in life, which opened the door for graphic violence, strong language and nudity. Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring star as women entangled in a Hollywood mystery. Sexy, terrifying and funny, Mulholland Dr. is one of the best movies of this century so far, a labyrinthine career high for a master of experimentation.

2. Magic Mike (2012)

Steven Soderbergh‘s comedic drama follows a hunky and naive 19-year-old (Alex Pettyfer) who enters the world of male stripping under the guidance of a seasoned pro (Channing Tatum). Magic Mike was a surprise summer smash—and a critical hit, too. This is the film that made Tatum one of the most sought-after stars in the world.

3. And God Created Woman (1956)

Roger Vadim‘s erotic drama about a sexually liberated orphan wasn’t the first film to star Brigitte Bardot, but it’s the one that made her a household name of the time, a defining “sex kitten.” Without explicit nudity (verboten at the time), And God Created Woman was so controversial enough in its day that law enforcement crashed some stateside screenings. Despite middling reviews, the forbidden fruit was a box-office smash.

4. Gia (1998)

HBO’s acclaimed biopic stars Angelina Jolie as American supermodel Gia Carangi, who became addicted to heroin, and died tragically at the age of 26. Gia costars Faye Dunaway, and Mila Kunis appears, playing Carangi at age 11.

5. Cruel Intentions (1999)

Roger Kumble‘s teen drama adapts Les Liaisons dangereuses to 1990s Upper East Side. The film boosted the careers of Sarah Michelle GellarReese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe, who are all terrific here. Cruel Intentions is of its time, sure (“Bitter Sweet Symphony” finale, anyone?)—but it’s a nostalgic touchstone for Gen X and millennials, with enough juicy drama and sexual tension to please new audiences for sure.

6. Behind the Candelabra (2013)

Soderbergh’s glossy-yet-gritty, deliciously soapy biopic of Liberace (Michael Douglas) and lover Scott Thurston (Matt Damon) was a huge win for HBO, winning 11 Emmys and two Golden Globes, on top of widespread critical acclaim. It premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or.

7. Dirty Dancing (1987)

One of the most iconic romances of the ’80s stars Jennifer Grey as a listless teen who falls for a dance instructor (Patrick Swayze). Quotable, immensely rewatchable and unusual, it’s a time-capsule tale of rebelliousness and blossoming sexuality.

8. Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989)

Pedro Almodóvar‘s uncanny blend of romantic comedy and horror movie was so controversial in its day it went to court. Miramax sued the MPAA for slapping Tie Me Up! with an X rating (generally reserved for porn). Tie Me Up! was released unrated and still grossed a considerable sum for a foreign film, and one year later the NC-17 rating debuted.

9. Looking: The Movie (2016)

Andrew Haigh‘s subtle, insightful look at three gay BFFs in the Bay Area was just on the cusp of greatness when it was canceled after two seasons. HBO at least greenlit a two-hour special event to tie up loose ends—too neatly, in fact. Looking still has a dedicated fanbase; maybe one day down the line we’ll get an HBO Max revival. Such a thing seems more possible than ever in light of the recently-announced Sex and the City revival series.

10. Chasing Amy (1997)

Writer/director Kevin Smith‘s rom-com stars Ben Affleck as a comic artist who falls head-over-heels…for a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams). Audiences and critics (including Roger Ebert, in a glowing review) were complimentary of the humorously edgy, relatable and graphic sex talk. Chasing Amy won two Film Independent Spirit Awards: a screenwriting win for Smith, and Best Supporting Actor for Jason Lee.

11. 7:20 Once a Week (2018)

Matías Bize‘s sex-fueled romantic drama stars Eva Arias and Josue Guerrero, as unfaithful married lovers who discover feelings after a tryst. It’s in Spanish with subtitles.

12. Love & Sex (2000)

Famke Janssen and Jon Favreau star in Valerie Breiman‘s rom-com about a magazine writer tasked with writing a women’s guide to love and sex within 24 hours. Among other things, Love & Sex is a reminder that Janssen (this film came out the same year as X-Men) is a breathtakingly attractive woman from any angle. The camera worships her.

13. A Kiss Before Dying (1991)

The mainstream erotic thriller was at the height of its popularity in the late ’80s-early-to-mid-’90s (Fatal AttractionBasic InstinctShowgirls!). One such example is James Dearden‘s high-profile remake of a 1956 noir classic, starring Matt Dillon, Max von Sydow and Sean YoungA Kiss Before Dying, based on Ira Levin‘s novel, is a thriller yarn about inheritance, murder and sexy twin sisters.

14. Blue Valentine (2004)

Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, this often uncomfortably intimate drama uses a nonlinear narrative to show us a couple’s sweet courtship, followed by a ripper of a breakup. Generous turns by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling help Blue Valentine stand out from other films of its ilk. The picture was originally slapped with an NC-17 for a relatively non-graphic sex scene depicting female pleasure (notoriously frowned upon by the MPAA). Upon appeal, the rating was bumped to R with no cuts.

15. Lost and Delirious (2001)

Piper PeraboMischa Barton and Jessica Paré received highly positive critical notices for their turns in Léa Pool‘s erotic teen drama about a love triangle at an all girls’ boarding school. Loosely based on The Wives of Bath by Susan Swan, Lost and Delirious premiered in competition at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.

16. Unfaithful (2002)

Diane Lane received wide acclaim and an Oscar nod for her turn in Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal’Adrian Lyne’s tale of emotional suspense—about a New York couple whose marriage takes a turn for the dangerous following an infidelity. Costarring Richard Gere and Olivier Martinez, Unfaithful is soapy erotic escapism for multiplexes; Lane is the standout every step of the way.

17. 9 1/2 Weeks (1986)

Before there was Fifty Shades of Grey, there was 9 1/2 Weeks (a better movie). Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger star in Adrian Lyne’s drama about a short-lived but intense affair between an art gallery employee and a Wall Street broker.

9 1/2 Weeks was the source of tons of hype and press in its day, largely because of its racy content. The picture was heavily edited for its U.S. release to tone this down, and it bombed here. It was released in an uncut version internationally, where it was a smash hit.

Many critics dog-piled on the movie when it came out, but it’s gained a following over time, with positive retrospective reviews. Roger Ebert gave 9 1/2 Weeks a highly positive review when it came out, saying he was “surprised by how thoughtful the movie is, how clearly it sees what really happens between its characters.”
