Pole dancing instructor Sam has fought tirelessly for her passion to be seen by the mainstream as a non-sexualised form of exercise.

She and husband Sid also saved some woodland in Compton from being turned into housing by buying it at auction - and now plan to turn it into a bushcraft school. Cool doesn't even begin to cover it.

French hunk, Romain Larrieu gained quite the following in his career at Plymouth Argyle - and it wasn't just for his football skill.

Former goalkeeper and club captain Larrieu has also been a charity fundraiser and campaigner for testicular cancer after being diagnosed with the disease in 2006.

Antony Jinman

There are few things cooler than being a record-breaking Polar explorer - and our Antony has a few of those under his (presumably thermal) belt.

The former forces man, who grew up in Wembury and went to Plymstock School, is also a climate change 'educator' and businessman.

Dawn Lapthorn

The lovely Dawn Lapthorn has possibly one of the kindest hearts in Plymouth.

Not only does she spend her time rescuing animals after a long day at work and reuniting them with their owners, she's always trying to find ways to make the lives of others better.

She's responsible for many Facebook pages that help, such as Don't Dump It and several community groups, bringing people together.

Dawn also landed second place in the Face of Plymouth 2019 competition.

Harrison Nash

He set up Maranatha Care Children

A gap year has become almost a rite of passage for many young people, but few have the vision of one Plymouth man who went on to found his own charity off the back of his journey.

It was a trip to South Africa in 2007 that changed Harrison Nash’s life forever. He enjoyed the work so much he went back again.

By the time he began his social work degree at the University of Plymouth he had begun the process of launching Maranatha Care Children, based in Port Elizabeth — a charity aiming to help South African children by offering development in education and life skills, providing suitable home environments and safeguarding the future of those in care.

Ten years later, the cause is still going strong — seeing hundreds of deprived and abused children grow up under the roof of its primary residential care project and move on to successful lives.

Harrison, now 30, took the brave leap in 2011 to leave the UK indefinitely and comes back once a year to see family and ensure the charity’s affairs are in order.
