‘Mulan’ coming to Disney+ Hotstar on Dec. 4 - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

The long-awaited live-action Disney movie Mulan will be available on Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform in Indonesia on Dec. 4.

Users in the country can watch the movie with no additional fee. The move seems to resemble the announcement made by Disney earlier this month, which said that all Disney+ subscribers would be able to watch Mulan for free starting on Dec. 4.

In early August, Disney announced that Mulan would skip movie theaters and premiere on its streaming platform in September. The movie is currently available for Disney+ subscribers for an additional $29.99.

The $200 million Mulan about a legendary female Chinese warrior is directed by Niki Caro and features the cast of Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jason Scott Lee and Jet Li, among others.

According to AFP, the movie received a backlash after it was revealed that some of its scenes were filmed in China’s Xinjiang, where widespread right abuses against the region’s Muslim population have been widely documented. Some viewers also spotted that Disney included “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang.

Disney+ Hotstar launched in Indonesia on Sept. 5 with a subscription fee of Rp 39,000 (US$2.61) per month or Rp 199,000 per year. On the platform, viewers can enjoy more than 500 movies and 7,000 episodes of global and Disney+ original content, including Marvel Studio films, all 12 Star Wars films, Pixar Animation Studio films and Disney’s live-action movies.

To mark the launch, Indonesian viewers without a subscription can watch several films for free until Sept. 30, including Thor: Ragnarok, Cinderella (2015), Cars 3 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In memory of the late actor Chadwick Boseman, the platform is also featuring Black Panther and a special episode Chadwick Boseman: A Tribute for a King for free. (wng)
