'Moon Knight' Episode 3: The Late Gaspard Ulliel Gives Perfect Sexy European Bad Guy Energy - Decider

begevege.blogspot.com

Moon Knight Episode 3 follows our heroes Marc/Steven (Oscar Isaac) and Layla (May Calamawy) as they race to find Ammit’s tomb before her acolyte Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) does, but it might well be remembered for introducing French actor Gaspard Ulliel as Anton Mogart, aka Midnight Man. Layla and Marc visit the European playboy about halfway through the episode and soon square off against him. It’s a short, splashy cameo for Gaspard Ulliel, who tragically died in January at the age of 37 after a skiing accident. The silver lining is Ulliel is fantastic in the Marvel part, making Midnight Man the perfect smarmy, sexy European bad guy for Moon Knight.

Moon Knight is the MCU’s latest live action original series for streaming service Disney+ and the first to delve into the world of Egyptian gods. Steven Grant is a mild-mannered museum gift shop worker who longs for nothing more than a normal life. While Steven believes he is afflicted with a sleepwalking disorder, he actually has Dissociative identity disorder or DID. His alter ego, Marc Spector, is a mercenary-turned-superhero who serves the Egyptian god Khonshu (voiced by F. Murray Abraham). This revelation thrusts Steven into a globe-trotting adventure battling gods, assassins, and himself.

In Moon Knight Episode 3, Marc/Steven and Layla try to outpace their rivals, who want to bring the vengeful goddess Ammit back to her former devastating glory. Layla discovers an old peer from Madripoor is in Egypt and in possession of a sarcophagus which can help them. Enter Anton Mogart.

In the Marvel comics, Anton Mogart is a New Jersey-based art and jewel thief who runs afoul of Moon Knight. The two face off and Mogart is presumed dead. He survives but swears vengeance on Moon Knight. Disney+’s Moon Knight kind of sets up this story line in a unique way as it certainly seems like Marc kills Mogart. (But did he? Did he really?)

Possible plans to bring Midnight Man as a future villain in the MCU have probably been scrapped since Ulliel’s untimely death. That’s a shame because Ulliel is really fun for the short time he’s on screen! Instead of being a mustache-twirling Jersey boy, he’s an international playboy. He rides horses shirtless and accessorizes with a scarlet robe. Mogart tells Layla he collects Egyptian artifacts to preserve culture, not realizing how much like a creepy white imperialist he comes off as by saying that (to the Egyptian daughter of an archaeologist). But it works because Gaspard Ulliel has the kind of chic European charisma to pull it off.

Gaspard Ulliel was an incredibly talented actor and charismatic star whose career and life were cut brutally short. His turn in Moon Knight, as short and sweet as it is, gives a whole new audience a glimpse of the supernova he could have become if given time.
