Week 5 Overreactions: Defense is sexy again; 2 SEC elites flatline - 247Sports

Let's not bore you with the obvious after an upset-heavy week in college football. Alabama and Georgia have emerged as the nation's only elite teams and it appears the Goliaths are on a collision course at the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, Friday and Saturday developed into Back to Earth Weekend across the rest of college football as undefeated programs such as Maryland, Arkansas and Ole Miss were demolished by their apparent "peers" in the top 10. Las Vegas saw it coming, and so did we, but did you?

Nine AP Top 25 teams lost, bumping the total to 34 ranked teams with a loss in the first five weeks of the season. Yes, there is parity, but but there is also a clear hierarchy between tiers 1 and 2.

Alabama was a mere mortal just two weeks ago. Florida carved up the Crimson Tide's defense on the edges and nearly rallied for what would have been the upset of the season. But, as Nick Saban does, he brushed it aside and punished the next opponent many labeled as a threat. Poor Ole Miss never really had a chance and Lane Kiffin only exacerbated the mismatch with his incredulous fourth-down attempts.

Today we emerge from our college football hangover with the Tide once again transformed into an invincible force that doesn't feel emotion or require sustenance to survive.

Meanwhile, look at Georgia thrive. The Bulldogs drilled top-10 Arkansas in a 37-0 win and has, without a doubt, the best defense in the sport.

But enough about the elite. Let's buy a round for Cincinnati, Penn State, Iowa, Kentucky and ... the Pac-12?

I'm high up in the trees today, so might as well go on a limb. This is Week 5's overreactions:
