How Buffy the Vampire Slayer Influenced Masked Dating Show Sexy Beasts - Screen Rant

begevege.blogspot.com

The creator of the unique masked dating show Sexy Beasts discusses one of its main sources of inspiration—Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sexy Beasts began as a British show back in 2014 that aimed to provide an unusual alternative to superficial dating by having its contestants wear elaborate prosthetic make-up, transforming them into animals or mythical creatures. The show gained worldwide attention when Netflix revived it earlier this year, with many comparing it to series like Love Is Blind and The Masked Singer. Despite somewhat mixed reviews, Sexy Beasts was picked up for season 2 that dropped on Netflix on October 7.

Despite the truly impressive prosthetic make-up that makes the show unique, many viewers have reported being disturbed by the weird concept, deeming it unsettling and confusing. Most wouldn’t guess that one of the dating show’s biggest inspirations was the beloved cult fantasy series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Though Sexy Beasts might seem like something that could only happen on the Hellmouth, the inspiration wasn’t actually linked to Buffy’s many beautiful and often tragic romances.

Instead, Sexy Beasts creator Simon Welton notes that the dating show was inspired by a well-worn comedic trope on Buffya very normal conversation between two demons. In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Welton spoke about how “funny” and visually “arresting” he would find it when vampires stopped fighting long enough to make small talk. Read his full quote below:

I used to love it when a couple of vampires would suddenly have a chat about mundane things [on Buffy]. The juxtaposition of these odd-looking creatures talking about the temperature or something like that, I thought that was funny, and quite arresting as a visual.

The make-up, masks, and prosthetics used on Sexy Beasts may be a lot more elaborate and detailed than the standard bumpy vampire face on Buffy, but it’s easy to see the connection between the two very different shows. Part of what makes Buffy so charming is its snappy dialogue and great characters, including demons. In fact, they often get some of the best jokes—of course, moments before they’re dusted by the Scooby Gang. It makes sense the casual conversations between the vampires stood out enough to Welton to impact the newest incarnation of Sexy Beasts.

A demon dating show certainly wouldn’t be out of place in Sunnydale. However, Netflix’s Sexy Beasts hasn’t had any contestants transformed into vampires just yet, with the show mainly focusing on anthropomorphic animal disguises. But whether they find the masked dating show hilarious or horrifying, those who watch Sexy Beasts should be interested to hear it all started with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
