Bee Movie: Jerry Seinfeld Apologises For 'Bee Movie' Being Too Sexy - Junkee

Despite dating a 17-year-old when he was 38, Jerry Seinfeld reckons that 'Bee Movie' is not appropriate for kids.

In a very odd turn of events, Jerry Seinfeld has apologised for his 2007 hit animated flick, Bee Movie, being too sexy.

While it took 14 years for Seinfeld to see the light, the comedian has finally acknowledged the “uncomfortable subtle sexual aspect” of Bee Movie, which is famously a film about a woman literally wanting to fuck a bee.

Chatting to Jimmy Fallon about it on The Tonight Show while promoting Seinfeld coming to Netflix in the US, Seinfeld explained that the sexual nature of the movie was “not intentional”. “I apologise for what seems to be a certain uncomfortable subtle sexual aspect of the Bee Movie,” the comedian explained. “[It] really was not intentional, but after it came out, I realised this is really not appropriate for children.

“Because the bee seems to have a thing for the girl, you know, and we don’t really want to pursue that as an idea in children’s entertainment.”

In case you’ve forgotten the plot of this iconic piece of cinema, Barry B. Benson the bee and a horny florist named Vanessa Bloome basically fall in love when Barry reveals he can talk. After Barry leaves his hive because he doesn’t want to work (mood), he starts flirting with Vanessa, finds out humans sell honey, and then tries to sue the human race for bee exploitation.

There’s a full-on court case, a bunch of bee incest jokes, Vanessa’s human fiancé tries to kill her bee lover, Vanessa dumps her man for Barry, and then the world almost ends. The whole thing is fucked and is just filled to the brim with so many sexual lines and themes.

So it’s really confusing that Seinfeld has only just now realised that the kid’s film has a “subtle sexual aspect” that actually isn’t subtle at all and probably not great for kids. But weirder than the whole “human woman wants to fuck a bee” movie plot is the fact that Jerry Seinfeld, as a 38-year-old, dated a 17-year-old girl in 1993 — something that one can argue is also “really not appropriate for children” either.

And despite that happening 28 years ago — exactly double the time it took for the comedian to apologise for his horny bee flick — we still haven’t gotten an apology on that one yet.

According to the writers and director of Bee Movie, the movie about a horny cartoon woman and equally horny bee was actually never meant to be sexual.

“It was never going to be sexual or anything like that,” director Steve Hickner told The New Statesmen in 2017. “It was purely this friendship. Maybe in Barry’s mind, he thought — but it was never going to be that.”

“Often, we would lose sight of those characters in the room,” writer Spike Feresten added, noting how the team could see how people might’ve thought the story was about an “interspecies love affair”.

“They would just be Barry and Vanessa, and we would write this dialogue for Barry and Vanessa, and read it over and have to remind ourselves, well, this is a tiny bee saying this, and the tiny bee is fighting with her boyfriend, so let’s dial it back to friend, and make it less romantic, because it’s getting weird.”

Sadly for Bee Movie writers, as much as they tried to avoid the film getting “weird”, the end result was absolutely bonkers. And we truly wouldn’t have it any other way.
