A.J. Alexy sexy in debut as Texas Rangers conquer Colorado Rockies - Lone Star Ball

The Texas Rangers scored four runs while the Colorado Rockies scored three runs.

Due to the team going through a season that I will at this moment generously refer to as growing pains, and an unexpected COVID outbreak, Texas has had to see three hurlers make their MLB debuts in the rotation over the last six days.

Last Wednesday, in Cleveland, Jake Latz had a line of 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 3 HR. He threw 57 strikes in 84 pitches in his first foray in the big leagues. It was a solid effort and something to build on. The Rangers lost 7-2.

On Friday, against Houston, Glenn Otto had a line of 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR. He threw 57 strikes in 73 pitches in what was easily one of the top debut starts by a Rangers pitcher in franchise history. The Rangers lost 5-4.

Tonight, against Colorado, it was A.J. Alexy’s turn.

Tasked with following Otto’s lead, Alexy turned in an outing to rival his young teammate as the former spoils of the Yu Darvish deal from the 2017 deadline had a line of 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR.

Alexy threw 43 strikes in 81 pitches and didn’t have quite the electric swing and miss stuff that Otto sported in his debut, but he was good. The 23-year-old righty was more wild on the mound with three free passes, but he allowed only a C.J. Cron double on his way to a third promising debut for the Rangers in less than a week.

Also, unlike the rookies before him, Alexy can claim a win in his debut.

Player of the Game: It’s Alexy but let’s give praise to Leody Taveras who broke out of a dreadful 0-for-31 slump at the plate with a double and a home run off the batter’s eye.

Even while awaiting those hits, Leody was putting the kinds of things that still makes him a prospect on display as the 22-year-old glided around center field snatching anything that came his way and showed his baserunning prowess on the leg-it-out double.

Up Next: The Rangers and Rockies are back at it again tomorrow night with RHP Jordan Lyles set to make the start for Texas against LHP Austin Gomber for Colorado. Tuesday’s first pitch from The Shed is scheduled for 7:05 pm CT.
