Candace Cameron Bure apologized after critics called a recent TikTok video, in which she’s holding a Bible while lip-syncing to a Lana Del Rey tune, “too sexy.”
“… I usually don’t apologize for these things but a lot of you thought it was weird and I’m sorry,” Bure, 45, said in a video on her Instagram Story Wednesday. “That was not my intention.”
In the video, the actress — a devout Christian who often discusses religion with her followers on social media — is seen lip-syncing to Del Rey’s song “Jealous Girl” while picking up a Bible and looking into the camera.
She captioned the video, “When they don’t know the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Bure explained that she meant no harm and was by no means trying to come off as sexy.
“I was using a very specific clip from TikTok and applying it to the power of the Holy Spirit, which is incredible,” she said. “And so many of you thought that I was trying to be seductive, which clearly means I’m not a very good actress because I was trying to be strong, not sexy or seductive.”
In the clip, she lip-syncs the lyrics, “Baby, I’m a gangster too and it takes two to tango / You don’t wanna dance with me, dance with me / Honey, I’m in love with you.”
The former sitcom star said she made the video after seeing her 22-year-old daughter Natasha Bure use the same audio, and emphasized that she was trying to have a religious discussion.
“I was trying to do my own version of it with the Bible and talk about the Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit, but that basically nothing can trump the Holy Spirit and we only know that by reading the Bible,” she said.
But Bure admitted that her post didn’t come across the way she had intended and she ultimately deleted the video from Instagram, although it remains on TikTok.
“Maybe I was just trying to be too cool or relevant in a Biblical way that didn’t work,” she said. “Anyway, most of you didn’t like it clearly, but there was a small percentage of you that appreciated what I did and understood my intention. But anyway, it’s gone. Now I know what you don’t like.”
This isn’t the first time some of Bure’s religious followers have slammed the actress. In September 2020, fans slammed Bure for posting a photo in which her husband, Valeri Bure, was seen grabbing one of her breasts. But that time, she defended her actions instead of apologizing.
“It’s my husband. We have so much fun together,” she said at the time. “He can touch me any time he wants, and I hope he does. This is what a healthy, good marriage and relationship is all about.”
She added, “I’m sorry if it offended you — I’m actually not sorry. I’m glad we have fun together after so many years. He can touch me all day long.”
Bure has been open about her feelings toward Instagram critics, saying in January, “Listen, on social media, everyone gets criticized, and if you are a celebrity, it just comes with the territory and I can handle it.”
